Patty Stovel and Paloma Prevail in $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix at HITS Culpeper III, Showday National

RHINEBECK, NY (July 9, 2000)-Five members of the USET show jumping team were among the 26 entries in the $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix at HITS Culpeper III on Sunday, July 9, for the Showday National Horse Show at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia. Team member Patty Stovel prevailed, taking first place with Paloma and third place with The Riddler, both owned by James B. Pirtl Enterprises. In a hotly contested jump-off, fellow team member Katie Prudent riding Elco for Tani Tops Zeidler was just .037 seconds slower than Stovel and placed second.
A veteran of 16 years in the Grand Prix ring, 43-year old Stovel of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, has been a member of the USET since 1994 when she competed at the World Equestrian Games in The Hague, Holland. In today`s win in addition to Prudent, Stovel rode against fellow team members Elise Haas, Todd Minikus, and Aaron Vale.

Course Designer Danny Foster from Ontario, Canada, built the Round One Course to include a triple at Fence Five, a double at Fence Nine, and another double at Fence 12 for a total of 17-elements with 95 seconds Time Allowed. Four riders did not complete the course, but eight riders were fault-free and moved on to the jump-off.

Amy Reistrup of Lexington, Virginia, on Thin Air was third to go on the short course and had the first clear round in 43.859, well within the 52-second Time Allowed, but ended up in fourth place. Reistrup set the pace though, and the chase was on. Patty Stovel followed Reistrup in the order with a clear round in 41.603 on The Riddler to take the lead. Next up was Prudent on Elco, who immediately snatched the lead with a blazing gallop around the course in 38.591. Stovel was back in the ring as the next rider and knew what she had to do-she galloped flat out to the finish for the win in 38.454. The last two riders, Mary Lisa Nicholson riding Graf Rossini and Emil Spadone in the irons on Enterprize, gave it their all to catch Stovel, but each had a rail down to place fifth and sixth respectively.
